National Safety Month: Empowering Seniors to Live Securely

Since we’re well into National Safety Month, it’s crucial to recognize the collaborative efforts that ensure the well-being of our seniors. The staff at Brickyard Healthcare and local first responders play a vital role in creating and maintaining a safe and secure environment for those who require short-term rehabilitation, assistance with daily activities, or extended support. In this blog post, we’ll explore the essential partnership we have and share valuable insights from local heroes who dedicate their lives to protecting our loved ones.
The Essential Role of First Responders in Nursing Homes
First responders play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of nursing home residents. We had the privilege of speaking with Steve Kropacek, Division Chief of Fire Prevention and Fire Marshal, and Luke Eichholtz, Firefighter and Paramedic, from the Greenfield Fire Department. Their insights shed light on the importance of collaboration between nursing homes and emergency services.
The Greenfield Fire Department conducts annual inspections of nursing homes to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations. They also provide valuable training to nursing home staff on fire safety procedures, evacuation plans, and the proper use of fire extinguishers. This proactive approach helps minimize the risk of fire-related incidents and ensures that staff members are well prepared to handle emergencies.
The Brandywine Care Center Fire: A Testament to Preparedness
In January, a fire broke out at our Brandywine Care Center in Greenfield, Indiana. Thanks to the swift actions of our well-trained staff and the rapid response of the Greenfield Fire Department, all residents were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
“I think that the staff’s response on that fire definitely showed that there had been a plan and training put in place that they were aware of and familiar with.” according to Luke Eichholtz.
This incident highlighted the importance of having a well-rehearsed emergency plan in place. Our staff members followed established protocols, ensuring a calm and orderly evacuation. The collaboration between our team and the fire department was seamless, demonstrating the value of ongoing communication and training.
Without their preparedness, the fire would have been “three times the scale had they not done what they did.”
Brickyard Healthcare’s Commitment to Safety
At Brickyard Healthcare, we understand that safety extends beyond fire prevention. We have comprehensive safety protocols in place to address various aspects of resident well-being. Our dedicated staff undergoes regular training to stay up to date with the latest safety practices and guidelines.
One of the key areas we focus on is fall prevention. Falls are a common concern for older adults and can lead to serious injuries. Our team assesses each resident’s risk for falls and implements personalized interventions to mitigate those risks. This may include adjusting medication regimens, providing assistive devices, and modifying the living environment to enhance safety.
According to Luke, “I think our number one response to nursing homes and probably the senior community as far as, like, medical is falls, slips, trips, hazards like that. Best thing we can do for that is, like I said, education, making sure we’re wearing appropriate footwear on slick flooring, things like that.”
Medication management is another critical aspect of safety in nursing homes. Our skilled nursing staff ensures that residents receive the right medications at the right times, and we closely monitor for any potential side effects or interactions. We also work closely with residents’ healthcare providers to optimize their medication regimens and minimize the risk of adverse events.
Safety Tips for Seniors and Caregivers
While we’re committed to providing a safe environment for our residents, we also want to empower seniors and their caregivers with preventative health knowledge and tips to enhance safety at home. Here are a few key areas and safety tips to focus on.
- Safety Proof Your Home: Conduct a thorough assessment of the home environment to identify and address potential hazards. This may include installing handrails, improving lighting, and removing tripping hazards like loose rugs or electrical cords.
- Medication Management: Keep an updated list of all medications, including dosages and schedules. Use pill organizers or reminders to ensure medications are taken as prescribed. Regularly review medications with healthcare providers to identify any potential interactions or side effects.
- Fall Prevention: Since falls are such a common accident, we encourage regular exercise to maintain strength and balance. Install grab bars in bathrooms and use non-slip mats in showers or bathtubs. Keep frequently used items within easy reach to avoid reaching or climbing.
- Emergency Preparedness: Develop an emergency plan and ensure that all family members or caregivers are familiar with it. Keep important phone numbers readily available, including those of healthcare providers and emergency services.
